Microcement calculator
Quick answer: For 20 m² of finish coat 1.5 mm thick (2.1 kg/m²) you need about 46 kg with a 10 % reserve, i.e. 2 bags of 25 kg.
Estimate materials for a microcement system
How the calculation works
Enter the area, pick the system, the varnish type and the reserve; if needed, change the layer thickness, consumption, number of layers and packs. The calculator works out the quantity per product and the number of packs, and optionally the cost.
Formula and assumptions
For each product: consumption per layer = consumption per mm of thickness × layer thickness (mm); consumption per m² = consumption per layer × number of layers; total = consumption per m² × area; with reserve = total × (1 + reserve); packs = with reserve ÷ pack size, rounded up. The examples below use typical values – the data on the pack or data sheet of the product you buy applies.
Worked example
Microcement finish compound: approx. 1.4 kg/m² per mm of thickness, 1.5 mm finish coat = 2.1 kg/m², 1 layer, 25 kg bags, 10 % reserve, area 20 m². Total 2.1 × 20 = 42 kg; with reserve 42 × 1.1 = 46.2 kg → 46.2 ÷ 25 = 1.85 → 2 bags (50 kg).
More worked examples
- Flexible base compound, 2 mm base coat: 1.5 × 2 = 3 kg/m², 10 % reserve, area 35 m²: 3 × 35 = 105 kg; with reserve 115.5 kg → 115.5 ÷ 25 = 4.62 → 5 bags (125 kg).
- Microcement finish compound in 2 layers of 1 mm (1.4 kg/m² per layer), 10 % reserve, area 12 m²: 1.4 × 2 × 12 = 33.6 kg; with reserve 36.96 kg → 36.96 ÷ 25 = 1.48 → 2 bags.
Microcement finish compound, 1.5 mm layer (1.4 kg/m²/mm × 1.5 mm = 2.1 kg/m²), 10 % reserve, 25 kg bags
| Area (m²) | Total (kg) | With reserve (kg) | Bags of 25 kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 21 | 23.1 | 1 |
| 20 | 42 | 46.2 | 2 |
| 30 | 63 | 69.3 | 3 |
| 50 | 105 | 115.5 | 5 |
| 100 | 210 | 231 | 10 |
What affects real consumption
- Substrate preparation and absorbency.
- Application technique and layer thickness.
- The protective lacquer (water-based or solvent-based) and its consumption.
Common mistakes
- Using the assumed consumption instead of the manufacturer's data sheet for each product.
- Forgetting the protective varnish, which has its own consumption and packs.
- Leaving out the reserve, so the last layer runs short on an uneven substrate.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get microcement consumption figures?
From the data sheet of the product you buy. Typical values are approx. 1.4 kg/m² per mm of layer thickness for the finish coat (1–3 mm per layer) and approx. 1.5 kg/m² per mm for the flexible base coat (2–5 mm per layer), so the consumption per layer is that figure times the thickness.
Is the lacquer included in the calculation?
Yes, separately. PU varnish (water-based or solvent-based) is typically applied in 2 coats of 70–120 g/m²; the calculator uses 120 g/m² per coat, i.e. 0.24 kg/m².
How much microcement do I need for 50 m²?
For a 1.5 mm finish coat (2.1 kg/m²) and a 10 % reserve it is 105 kg, 115.5 kg with reserve, i.e. 5 bags of 25 kg.
Does the number of layers change the amount?
Yes, it scales linearly: each extra layer adds its consumption per m² to the total. Enter the number of layers your system requires.
