Area Unit Conversion
Quick answer: 1 are = 100 m², 1 hectare = 100 ares = 10,000 m², 1 m² = 10,000 cm², 1 ft² = 0.0929 m² and 1 acre ≈ 4,046.86 m² ≈ 0.405 ha.
Square millimetres to square kilometres, ares, hectares, square inches, feet and yards and acres – all conversions at once.
How the calculation works
Enter an area and choose the starting unit (e.g. m², are or hectare). The table shows the same area in square millimetres, centimetres, decimetres, metres and kilometres, ares, hectares, square inches, feet and yards, and acres.
Formula and assumptions
The base unit is the square metre. A square unit factor is the length factor squared: 1 m = 100 cm, so 1 m² = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm². An are is 10 × 10 m = 100 m², a hectare 100 × 100 m = 10,000 m². 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m².
More worked examples
- An 850 m² plot: 850 ÷ 100 = 8.5 ares.
- A 2.3 ha field: 2.3 × 10,000 = 23,000 m².
- A 30 × 60 cm tile = 1,800 cm² = 0.18 m².
- A 900 ft² flat: 900 × 0.09290304 ≈ 83.6 m².

Common mistakes
- Converting m² to cm² with 100 instead of 10,000.
- Mixing up ares (100 m²) and hectares (10,000 m²) when buying land.
- Converting square feet with 0.3048 instead of 0.3048².
Frequently asked questions
How many square metres are in a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 m², a square of 100 × 100 m. That is the same as 100 ares.
How do I convert ares to m²?
Multiply by 100: 7.5 ares = 750 m². To convert square metres to ares, divide by 100.
How many m² are in an acre?
One acre is 4,046.86 m², or about 0.405 ha. One hectare is about 2.471 acres.
Why are square units not converted with 100?
Because the factor is squared too: 1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm². The same goes for feet: 1 ft² = 144 in².
