Quick answer: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 30.48 cm, 1 are = 100 m², 1 hectare = 10,000 m², 1 m³ = 1,000 litres, 1 tonne = 1,000 kg, 1 kgf = 9.80665 N and 1 hp = 745.7 W.
Convert length, area, volume, mass, force and power: cm to m, inches to cm, hectares and acres to m², m³ to litres, kg to tonnes, kW to hp
How the calculation works
Choose the kind of measure (length, area, volume, mass, force or power), enter a value and the starting unit. The converter instantly shows the result in the chosen unit and a table with every unit of that kind. The swap button reverses the direction and every value can be copied. The converter does not calculate the area or volume of shapes – it only converts units.
Formula and assumptions
Each unit has an exact factor relative to the base unit (m, m², m³, kg, N or W): result = value × factor of the starting unit ÷ factor of the target unit. The factors are the official definitions: 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L, 1 kgf = 9.80665 N, 1 hp = 745.69987 W. Results are shown rounded to 6 significant digits.
More worked examples
- A 60 cm board: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6 m.
- A 10 ft pipe: 10 × 0.3048 = 3.048 m.
- A 7.5 are plot: 7.5 × 100 = 750 m².
- A 2.4 m³ tank: 2.4 × 1,000 = 2,400 litres.
- 2,500 kg of sand: 2,500 ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 tonnes.
- A 75 kW motor: 75 × 1.34102 ≈ 100.6 hp.

Common mistakes
- Converting m² to cm² with 100 instead of 10,000 (the length factor must be squared for area and cubed for volume).
- Mixing up the US gallon (3.785 L) and the imperial gallon (4.546 L).
- Confusing the fluid ounce (volume) with the ounce (mass) – they are different units.
- Converting litres to kilograms without the density: 1 L of water is about 1 kg, but 1 L of concrete is about 2.4 kg.
Frequently asked questions
How many centimetres are in an inch?
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, or 25.4 mm. Pipe sizes in inches (e.g. 1/2") are nominal and do not always match the actual diameter.
What does a cubic metre hold in litres?
One cubic metre holds 1,000 litres. The volume of a room or of bulk material is usually given in m³.
How do I convert kilograms to tonnes?
Divide by 1,000: 2,500 kg = 2.5 t. To convert tonnes to kilograms, multiply by 1,000.
Does the converter calculate the area or volume of a room?
No, it only converts units. Use the area calculator for floor or wall area and the volume calculator for solids such as cuboids or cylinders.
Does the converter work offline?
Yes. In the Android app conversions are calculated on the device, so they work without an internet connection.
