Mass Unit Conversion

Quick answer: 1 t = 1,000 kg, 1 kg = 100 dag = 1,000 g, 1 dag = 10 g, 1 pound (lb) = 453.59 g and 1 ounce (oz) = 28.35 g.

Milligrams, grams, decagrams, kilograms and tonnes, plus pounds and ounces – enter a value and see every conversion at once.

How the calculation works

Enter a mass and choose the starting unit (e.g. kg, tonne or pound). The table shows the same mass in milligrams, grams, decagrams, kilograms and tonnes, and in pounds and ounces.

Formula and assumptions

The base unit is the kilogram. Metric units differ by powers of 10: 1 t = 1,000 kg, 1 kg = 100 dag = 1,000 g, 1 g = 1,000 mg. Imperial units are defined exactly: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 oz = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g.

More worked examples

  • 2,500 kg to tonnes: 2,500 ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 t.
  • 25 dag to grams: 25 × 10 = 250 g.
  • A 50 lb bag: 50 × 0.45359237 ≈ 22.68 kg.
  • 0.75 t to kilograms: 0.75 × 1,000 = 750 kg.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the metric tonne (1,000 kg) with the US short ton (907 kg).
  • Confusing the ounce (mass) with the fluid ounce (volume).
  • Converting volume to mass without the density of the material.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilograms are in a tonne?

A metric tonne is 1,000 kg: 0.75 t = 750 kg. To convert kilograms to tonnes, divide by 1,000.

How many grams are in a decagram?

A decagram (dag) is 10 g, so 25 dag = 250 g and 100 dag = 1 kg.

How many kilograms is one pound?

One pound (lb) is exactly 0.45359237 kg, or about 454 g. One kilogram is about 2.205 pounds.

Is mass the same as weight?

In everyday speech yes, but in physics weight is a force (in newtons). The converter converts units of mass: kilograms, tonnes, grams, pounds and ounces.
