Voltage Conversion

Quick answer: 1 kV = 1,000 V, 1 V = 1,000 mV = 1,000,000 µV, 1 MV = 1,000,000 V; European mains is 230 V and a 110 kV line is 110,000 V.

Volts, millivolts, microvolts, kilovolts and megavolts, plus the CGS abvolt and statvolt – every voltage conversion.

How the calculation works

Enter a voltage (it may be negative) and choose the unit. The table shows the same voltage in µV, mV, V, kV and MV and in the CGS abvolt and statvolt.

Formula and assumptions

The base unit is the volt (1 V = 1 W/A = 1 J/C). SI prefixes multiply by 10³: kV = 10³ V, mV = 10⁻³ V. In CGS units 1 abV = 10⁻⁸ V and 1 statV = c × 10⁻⁶ V ≈ 299.79 V.

More worked examples

  • Mains 230 V = 0.23 kV.
  • A sensor at 25 mV = 0.025 V.
  • Distribution at 20 kV = 20,000 V.
  • A 12 V battery = 12,000 mV.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing mV and MV (millivolt and megavolt).
  • Mixing RMS and peak AC voltage (230 V RMS ≈ 325 V peak).
  • Mixing voltage (V) with power (VA, W).
